Retrospective Descriptive Study of patients with Suicidal Behavior attended in High Complexity Clinics in Colombia between 2020 and 2021

dc.descriptionIntroduction: Suicidal behavior is a public health problem that affects approximately 800,000 people per year, mainly affecting low- and middle-income countries. Methodology: A retrospective descriptive study was developed of a cohort of patients who attended the emergency department for suicidal behavior, who were treated in seven high complexity hospitals in different regions of Colombia between 2.020 and 2.021. Data were extracted from the suicidal behavior surveillance system SISVECOS (by its acronym in Spanish) and from the patients' medical records. Cases were classified according to type of event, mechanism of injury, behavior, and status at discharge from care. Results: A total of 1,190 patients with suicidal behavior were reported, with a higher proportion of females (64.62%, n=769) compared with 35.38% (n=421) of males. The median age was 22 years, the mean was 26 years and the standard deviation was 13 years. The most common presenting event was attempted suicide with 68.82% (n=819), followed by suicidal ideation with 27.65% (n=329), and completed suicide was 0.92% (n=11) of the cases. In addition, an increase in reported cases was observed in 2,021 compared to 2,020 (65.97% versus 34.03%).   Conclusions: A behavior similar to that reported in the literature was observed. There is a need for strategies to address suicidal behavior, especially in the young population, which presented the highest number of cases. Research should be continued and risk factors should be studied in more depth.en-US
dc.descriptionIntroducción: La conducta suicida es un problema de Salud Pública que afecta aproximadamente a 800.000 personas al año, afectando principalmente a países de bajos y medianos ingresos. Metodología: Se desarrolló un estudio descriptivo retrospectivo de una cohorte de pacientes atendidos en urgencias por conducta suicida, quienes fueron atendidos en siete clínicas de alta complejidad en diferentes regiones de Colombia entre 2.020 y 2.021. Los datos se extrajeron del Sistema de Vigilancia en Salud Pública Nacional y subsistema de la Conducta Suicida (SISVECOS) y de las historias clínicas de los pacientes. Los casos se clasificaron de acuerdo al tipo de evento, mecanismo de lesión, conducta y estado al egreso de la atención. Resultados: Se reportaron en total 1.190 pacientes con conducta suicida, identificándose una mayor proporción del sexo femenino con el 64,62% (n=769), frente al 35,38% (n=421) de sexo masculino. La mediana de edad fue de 22 años, la media de 26 años y la desviación estándar de 13 años. El evento que más se presentó fue el intento de suicidio con el 68,82% (n=819), seguido de la ideación suicida con un 27,65% (n=329), y el suicidio consumado fue el 0,92% (n=11) de los casos. Además, se observó un aumento de los casos reportados en 2.021 en comparación a 2.020 (65,97% versus 34,03%).    Conclusiones: Se observa un comportamiento similar a lo reportado en la literatura. Se identifica la necesidad de plantear estrategias para abordar la conducta suicida, en especial en la población joven la cual presentó la mayor cantidad de casos.es-ES
